May Gibbs' Nutcote
We know how important children were to May Gibbs through her books, illustrations and bequests to children’s charities, and children of all ages were always welcome at Nutcote.
Nutty Story and Rhyme Time is just that – a time to read a Gum-Nutty story by May Gibbs, followed by at least one or two more books by contemporary Australian children’s authors. We then sing well-known nursery rhymes as requested by children and end the session with some craft. On occasion, balloons may be brought in to tie into animals at the request of the children.
All ages are welcome and every month a range of books are brought to suit all ages. For the most part this event appeals to pre-schoolers aged 3-5 years. Parents can help their children with craft, particularly when using scissors and glue. When it falls during the school holidays, books and crafts fror primary school aged children are also made available. Sometimes we have a theme such as ‘Australian animals’, ‘Christmas’, ‘Gardens’ or ‘Winter’ which sets the tone for the stories and craft activities planned. Children are encouraged to come in a costume or can dress up in one of our delightful Gumnut costumes.
Children love coming to Nutcote. There is no playground or electronic equipment and yet they are enchanted and don’t want to leave. They engage with the caterpillar hedge, uneven paths, gardens and sculptures found within. They love morning tea on the terrace and attending special events for families. After all, they are the ones who can see Gumnut babies peeking out from behind a leaf, or perhaps even a Banksia Man.
Note: Standard entry fees apply and Friends of Nutcote come in for free. There is no additional cost for Nutty Story and Rhyme Time and no charge for craft items or balloons.
*Any cancellations due to severe weather or other unforeseen circumstances will be updated on our FaceBook apge at Facebook.com/MayGibbsNutcote. Our page will also let you know what the theme is for each story time and if the Bib and Bub tearoom will be open, so please become a fan and check the evening before or prior to leaving home.
